Director, Immunology

SUMMARY:

Icosavax, Inc. is a publicly traded (NASDAQ: ICVX) biopharmaceutical company leveraging its innovative VLP platform technology to develop vaccines against infectious diseases, with an initial focus on life-threatening respiratory diseases. Icosavax’s VLP platform technology is designed to enable multivalent, particle-based display of complex viral antigens, which it believes will induce broad, robust, and durable protection against the specific viruses targeted. Icosavax’s pipeline includes vaccine candidates targeting respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2). Icosavax was formed in 2017 to advance the breakthrough VLP technology from the Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington with the goal to discover, develop, and commercialize vaccines against infectious diseases. Icosavax has an experienced management team, has raised over $350M to date, and is based in Seattle.

The Icosavax preclinical development group is seeking a Director level scientist with a strong immunology and/or virology background to help progress our preclinical pipeline and provide leadership for our vaccine efforts. The Director will help define criteria for advancing programs through preclinical development, identify potential external collaborations and define and execute internal studies. The Director will also collaborate with internal teams and external vendors on development projects and cooperate and grow with the scientific team and the broader company at large.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop vaccine candidates and drive them through pre-clinical validation to advance from research and into development
  • Translate vaccine programs’ strategic goals into operational plans
  • Work with internal and external partners and vendors to evaluate VLP-based vaccine candidates and adjuvants in animal models
  • Responsible for monitoring and supporting critical-path activities to advance preclinical programs
  • Design, carry out, interpret, and communicate experiments that integrate cutting edge immunology and vaccine science to support candidate development
  • Support the development of Icosavax’s pipeline strategy in conjunction with internal functions and our Scientific Advisory Board
  • Contribute broadly to the work of the group, including supervision of junior colleagues, research into multiple viral vaccine candidates, management of laboratory activities and fulfillment of compliance obligations.
  • Provide expert input into internal documents and external patent applications, regulatory submissions, scientific papers and other communications for priority programs, including RSV/hMPV, SARS2 and new program areas as they are initiated.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ph.D. degree in immunology, virology or related field is required
  • At least 12+ years industry/academic experience
  • Practical knowledge of immune responses to vaccines and experience advancing vaccine candidates through preclinical evaluation into development
    • Experience with antigen validation in animal models is a key component of this
      role
  • Experience managing in vivo preclinical studies at CROs
  • Experience in development of respiratory virus vaccines
  • Experience with adjuvants and/or influenza a plus
  • Strong verbal/written communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced start-up environment
